Richard Kershaw
Enjoys precision and curiosity, The details of winemaking. My philosophy is not about rules but about creating wines that reflect their origin with as little interference as possible. The vineyard always comes first, the maturation process plays the second key role, and winemaking itself gives direction. The grapes grow for six months on the vine, while maturation lasts at least as long and shapes the final result. During harvest, we select grapes by clone and soil type and match them to barrels using an algorithm developed over the years. From eleven parcels, we create twenty-one batches of wine, tasting every six weeks to decide whether to stir, rotate, or let them rest.
Born in the UK, I first worked as a chef before discovering wine. After gaining experience in California, Chile, Bordeaux, Hungary, and Germany, I settled in South Africa in 1999. I earned my Master of Wine in 2011, founded Kershaw Wines in 2012, and joined the Cape Winemakers Guild in 2021.
